Watchmen

Postby SPQR on Mon Oct 05, 2009 9:12 pm

I bought this DVD on a whim, it sat on a shelf for weeks. I thought someday when I was really bored--I would watch it. Sunday was that day, I was totally expecting some cheesy superhero movie (daredevil) But much to my surprise, this dark tale captivated me for two and a half hours, and afterwords this story and its very strange characters stayed in my thoughts as I tried to think of any movie, even remotely like it, and it finally hit me.....that was one d.a.m.n. good movie!!!

Do yourself a favor and pick up the original graphic novel. It is a thousand times better than the movie. It was the only graphic novel that was named as one of the 100 greatest novels of all time. If graphic novels aren't your thing they also made a motion comic that does a good job of staying true to the material.

Nothing against the film-makers but nobody could adapt such a great story into a 3 hour film.

I haven't read the graphic novel yet, but I've heard mixed reviews on how well the movie translation gets it. I watched the movie (I was told beforehand that it was dark) and was blown away. I'm not one for gratuitous violence or sex but the story overpowered most of that for me. I'd recommend it to any comic book sci-fi fan.

After my busy season of the year I sat down and re-read the graphic novel. I can say without a shadow of a doubt it is still one of the greatest stories I've ever read. The pacing, character development and plot are simply outstanding.

It's no wonder Time named it one of the best of the 20th century. Fans of the film I can not recommend enough you read the original graphic novel.

Tomorrow I think I will reread the V for Vendetta novel, another Moore work that is better than the film.

I just got the Ultimate Cut on Blu-Ray and it is amazing. The film includes the Directors cut with Tales of the Black Freighter interweaved and it includes tons of great special features. This version is definitely the best out there. In full 1080p and surround sound it is awesome. Not only that but it also includes the motion comic in case anybody wants to see the original source material.

If anyone has Blu-Ray this is the one to get.
